The questions that make a moving quote honest
The headline number on a moving quote is mostly the crew's time. Fees, minimums, and coverage decide the real total, and they only come out if you ask.
A real quote is in writing, follows a video or in-person survey, and lists every line below. A number over the phone with none of that is not a quote. Ask these before you commit, and get the answers in writing.
The six questions
Binding total or estimate
“Is this a binding total or an estimate that can change on move day, and what would change it?”
Minimum charge and travel time
“Is there a minimum charge or a minimum number of hours? Do you also bill travel time or a truck fee?”
Stairs and long carry
“What is added if the crew uses stairs or an elevator, or has to park far from the door?”
Packing materials
“Are boxes, tape, wrap, and mattress bags included in this price, or billed after the job?”
Damage coverage
“What coverage is included at this price? How do you pay out for a damaged item, and what does more coverage cost?”
Deposit and cancellation
“What deposit do you need, and what part of it comes back if I cancel or move the date?”
Why three quotes
Quotes for the same move routinely land $100 to $300 apart, and sometimes more. Collecting three written quotes is the single highest-value hour of the whole move: it shows you the market rate for your exact job and gives you leverage with the mover you actually want.
For context on the numbers themselves, typical local-move rates are in our movers cost guide, checked Aug 2026.
What a written confirmation must contain
Until that document is in your hands, the service is requested, not booked. Movers going quiet in the final week is exactly why a plan B mover belongs on your checklist.
- The date and the arrival window.
- Crew size and the truck.
- The inventory the price is based on.
- The total, and whether it is binding.
- The deposit and what part of it comes back if plans change.
Questions
What is a binding moving quote?
A binding quote is a total the mover commits to for the surveyed inventory. A non-binding estimate can change on move day. Ask which one you are holding and what would change it.
Do movers charge extra for stairs?
Many do, as a stair or elevator fee, and some add a long-carry fee when the truck cannot park near the door. Both are exactly the kind of line item that appears on the invoice unless you ask for it in the quote.
Should I pay a moving deposit?
A modest deposit is normal. Before paying, ask what part of it is refundable if you cancel or move the date, and get the answer in writing. Move dates slip often enough that this clause matters.
Your dates change the order. MoveNara puts every step above on your calendar, next to the other services, and tracks what's actually confirmed, not just requested.
